Fine Art Prints: The Complete Buying Guide

Everything you need to choose a fine art print: which artists and movements to start with, how a poster differs from a framed canvas print, which size fits your wall, and how to match colours to a room.

What is a fine art print?

A fine art print is a high-resolution reproduction of a painting, drawing or photograph, printed to order on archival paper or canvas. It is not the original work and it is not signed; it is the way most people live with the paintings they love, from a Klimt in the bedroom to a Hopper in the hallway. At Print of America every print is made after you order it, in a print facility close to you, and shipped free to every country.

Poster or framed canvas print?

Format What you get Best for
Poster Print on thick matte paper (about 250 gsm). No frame. Lowest price; choosing your own frame; gallery walls; rotating prints often.
Framed canvas print Printed on canvas, stretched on a wooden frame, finished with a dark wood or black frame, hanging hardware attached. A finished, ready-to-hang piece; large sizes over a sofa or bed; rooms with lots of windows (no glass, no glare).

Which size?

  • 15×20 and 30×45 cm (6×8, 12×18 in) – desks, shelves, gallery walls of several prints.
  • 45×60 cm (18×24 in) – hallways, bathrooms, above a side table.
  • 60×90 and 75×100 cm (24×36, 30×40 in) – above a sofa, bed or dining table; the size at which a painting starts to feel like the original.

A simple rule: the artwork should be about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it, with its centre at roughly 145 cm (57 in) from the floor. Most paintings are landscape or portrait; check the product photos for the orientation before choosing a size.

Which colours for which room?

  • Living room – warm Impressionist landscapes, Klimt golds, or one large bold abstract.
  • Bedroom – calm blues and greens: Cézanne, Marin seascapes, Riley stripes in soft tones.
  • Office or study – Precisionist cityscapes (Demuth, Sheeler), Albers geometry, quiet Wyeth landscapes.
  • Dining room and hallway – deep reds and ochres that glow under evening light: Soutine, Derain, Redon.
