About this artwork

Crumbling houses cling to the steep hills of Atrani in this early Escher lithograph. Dilapidated Houses in Atrani reveals the artist’s fascination with perspective and architecture, long before his famous impossible constructions. The dense composition forces your gaze upward along the narrow streets and weathered buildings. Textures of stone and stucco contrast with the soft, intricate patterns of laundry hanging from windows. Escher’s precise lines capture the play of light and shadow on the uneven surfaces, creating a sense of depth and dimension. This print feels at home in a study or library, where its quiet complexity invites closer inspection.
