About this artwork

A coffee can perches on a shelf in Savarin Ulae 183. Jasper Johns turns the ordinary into something more. The can is not alone, it shares its space with a brush, both resting on a ledge that seems to float against a muted ground. The background is a study in texture, a field of crosshatching that draws the eye. The colors are subdued, a palette of grays and whites, with the occasional hint of ochre. The brush lies horizontally, its bristles pointing to the right, as if just used and set aside for a moment. The can, with its label facing forward, is the central figure in this quiet composition. This poster fits well in a kitchen or studio, where the everyday becomes art.
