About this artwork
A wooden box with a crank sits still. This is Useless Machine, a playful creation by Bruno Munari that challenges the notion of functionality in art. The simplicity of the object belies its whimsical nature, inviting interaction and curiosity.
The artwork consists of a small wooden box with a crank on its side. The box is unadorned, its natural wood grain visible, giving it a humble and almost toy-like appearance. The crank, when turned, sets off a brief mechanical movement, adding a layer of surprise and delight to the piece.
