About this artwork
Above a mid-century credenza, this portrait commands attention. Wayne (59) by Wayne Thiebaud is a study in quiet intensity, where the subject’s gaze meets yours across the room. The muted palette of ochres and umbers grounds the composition. Thiebaud’s loose brushwork softens the figure’s features, yet the direct gaze creates an unmistakable presence. Subtle shifts in tone suggest volume without hard lines, giving the face a living, breathing quality. This portrait suits a study or library, where its contemplative mood complements quiet moments with a book or conversation.Questions about Wayne (59)
