About this artwork
Thick, tactile brushstrokes build the face in Wayne, a self-portrait by Wayne Thiebaud. The artist’s hand is visible in every ridge of paint, in the careful lines that map his features. The portrait is a study in restraint and warmth. Thiebaud’s face emerges from a muted background, his gaze directed to the side, lips slightly parted. The palette is subdued, dominated by soft ochres and creams, with only a hint of color in the shadows. This print belongs in a quiet corner, where light catches the texture. A study, a library, or a bedroom would suit it well.Questions about Wayne
