About this artwork

A man’s head and shoulders fill the frame in Wayne Thiebaud’s self-portrait titled Wayne. The artist’s gaze meets ours directly, creating an immediate connection with the viewer. The portrait is a study in subtle contrasts and restrained brushwork. Soft browns and creams form the foundation of the palette, with hints of blue in the shadows. Thiebaud’s technique is evident in the careful modeling of the face, where light and shadow define the features with quiet precision. The background remains uncluttered, ensuring the focus stays on the subject’s thoughtful expression. This understated portrait suits a study or reading nook, where its quiet presence complements moments of reflection.
