About this artwork
A man's face, rendered with quiet intensity, fills the frame of Wayne Thiebaud's self-portrait titled Wayne. The artist’s gaze meets ours, steady and unflinching, as if inviting us into a private moment of reflection. The portrait is a study in restraint, with muted tones of ochre and umber shaping the contours of his features. Thiebaud’s brushwork is deliberate, each stroke contributing to the subtle gradations of light and shadow that define his expression. The background fades into obscurity, ensuring that the focus remains solely on the subject’s contemplative visage. This understated yet powerful piece finds its place in a study or library, where the quiet presence of the artist’s gaze can be a companion to moments of thought and creativity.
