About this artwork
A man’s face fills the frame, his features rendered in soft strokes. This is Wayne, a self-portrait by Wayne Thiebaud that invites a quiet moment of reflection. The artist’s gaze meets ours, steady and unflinching, as if challenging us to look deeper.
The palette is restrained, a harmony of muted pinks and soft greens. Thiebaud’s brushwork is loose yet deliberate, the background a wash of color that allows the figure to stand out. Shadows play across his face, hinting at depth without overwhelming the composition. There’s a sense of calm here, a stillness that feels almost meditative.
This portrait fits seamlessly into a study or reading nook, where its quiet presence can be appreciated.
